Moscow: 35 people were killed and dozens injured in an explosion at a gas station in southern Russia. The explosion occurred at 9:40 p.m. local time (18:40 GMT) on Monday in Makhachkala, the regional capital of Dagestan on the shores of the Caspian Sea. Makhachkala is about 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) from Moscow. Images of a large fireball rising into the sky were widely circulated on social media.
Local media reports that the fire broke out at a car repair center near the gas station. President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences. A state of emergency has been declared in the Kumtorkalinsky district of Dagestan, according to regional head Sergey Melikov. Around 260 volunteers have been deployed. The Ministry of Emergencies said that the seriously injured have been airlifted to Moscow. The ministry added that the rescue operation is continuing.
Three children were among the dead, Russia’s Interfax news agency reported, citing doctors.The report said the fire had spread to an area of 600 square meters (6,460 square feet) and that more explosions were possible.
