Deadly shootings in South Africa

On Saturday night, assailants opened fire on a group of people in a suburb of the capital, Johannesburg, killing four of them, police said Sunday.

This attack comes a week following two bar-goers were indiscriminately shot in two separate incidents in South Africa killing 20 people, including 16 in Soweto, near Johannesburg. In Linasia, a suburb south of the country’s economic capital, assailants opened fire on Saturday evening at these men gathered on a street corner.

Police spokeswoman Masundo Mavilla confirmed to AFP that they had killed four of them and wounded two others.

“They were sitting, they were attacked for no apparent reason,” regional police chief Elias Moila said at the scene of the attack, referring to “another horrific crime.”

An investigation was opened. Shootings are common in South Africa, one of the most violent countries in the world.
