The facts took place that night around 12:30 a.m. Firefighters and police were rushed to a shootout with injuries. The incident took place at the back of the MJC cultural center, near the parking lot. According to initial information, two people were involved in an argument, during which a weapon was drawn. The situation reportedly degenerated and shots rang out. Despite the rapid arrival of the rescue zone, a young Cominois died on the spot.
The perpetrator fled by car before hitting one of the posts of the border bridge. Panicked, the man jumped into the Lys to try to escape the police. It arrived en masse on the scene, supported by the helicopter of the federal police. Firefighters, meanwhile, sent several divers into the water. The impressive manhunt was unsuccessful, however, and the perpetrator managed to escape.
“I can only say that there was an incident at the MJC,” replied Mayor Alice Leeuwerck. “An investigation is ongoing and therefore I cannot provide further information. The prosecution has sent someone on the spot, they will manage the investigation and will communicate as soon as possible”.
This Saturday morning, the Tournai prosecutor’s office took charge of the case and it was not possible to reach him.
