Deadly Tokyo Health Supplement Recall: 5 Deaths and 100+ Hospitalizations

Tokyo — In the past week, a series of Japanese health supplements have caused significant harm, resulting in five deaths and over 100 hospitalizations. Osaka-based Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Co. has faced criticism for failing to disclose internal problems that were discovered as early as January, with the first public announcement only being made on March 22.

The supplements in question contain an ingredient called benikoji, a red species of mold, which has been linked to kidney problems and other health complications. The exact cause of these health issues is still under investigation, in collaboration with government laboratories.

President Akihiro Kobayashi held a press conference on Friday to apologize for the company’s actions. He expressed deep remorse to the families of those who have died or fallen ill, as well as to the entire health food industry and medical profession. Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Co. is committed to preventing further harm and improving crisis management.

As a result of the recall, not only have Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Co.’s products been affected, but also numerous other products that contain benikoji, including miso paste, crackers, and vinegar dressing. The Ministry of Health in Japan has published a list of all the recalled products on its official website, cautioning that the number of deaths may continue to rise. It is possible that some of the supplements were purchased or exported prior to the recall, including by unaware tourists.
