Deadly Tornado Ravages Westmoreland, Kansas: Updates and News

One person was killed Tuesday when a tornado ripped through the small northeast town of Westmoreland Kansasdestroying homes, RVs and outbuildings, authorities said.

Pottawatomie County officials said on Facebook that a tornado hit the town of about 700 people Tuesday night, destroying 22 homes, three RVs and five outbuildings and damaging 13 more homes and one commercial building. First responders conducted grid searches in Westmoreland to assess damage and search for people who may have been injured.

A Pottawatomie County spokesman confirmed the single death in a news release sent to the media. The name of the person who died is being withheld pending family notification.

Westmoreland is about 45 miles (72 kilometers) northwest of Topeka and is the Pottawatomie County seat.

Images posted on social media show a tornado on the ground in Westmoreland, as well as damaged homes, uprooted trees and an overturned semi.

The provincial spokesperson said the entire city was without power on Tuesday evening and district offices were using emergency generators. The Red Cross set up a shelter at the local high school about 6 miles (10 kilometers) from town.

Tuesday’s storms came just two days after tornadoes tore through Oklahoma Sunday, four people dead and at least 100 injured. Tornadoes rolled through on Friday Nebraska and Iowa, demolishing homes and businesses and leaving one person dead.
