Dealing with Chronic Cockroach Infestations: A Recurring Concern in Social Housing – Isabella Flores’ Struggle

2023-10-13 14:00:00

For Isabella Flores, the situation is difficult to live with. She has been living with cockroaches for several months. The insects took up residence in his kitchen and soon invaded the entire apartment. She had to wait several months before the social housing company intervened. For her part, Sambrian explains that the problem is unfortunately recurring.

“In the kitchen, you see, they are everywhere.” Isabella shows us the cockroach corpses. On the floor, in the cupboards and then a few insects still alive. The Sambrienne services have just stopped by to treat the accommodation. But for Isabella, it’s far too late. “They took 5 or 6 months to come. I feel angry and disrespected“, she explains.

For her part, the Sambrian indicates that she was only warned last August. However, it has been several months. And obviously, Isabella’s situation is not an isolated case. “This is a problem which fortunately is specific building by building but which is recurring in our fleet, we must be clear“, explains David Conte, spokesperson for Sambrienne.

The housing association says it spends more than 200,000 euros a year to deal with pest problems. But eradicating them is not easy. “In these cases, we intervene on 3 points. First there is prevention with poster campaigns to remind residents what can lead to the proliferation of cockroaches. The second is necessarily technical intervention. We have a contract with a specialized company. And the last point is reserved for problematic situations. When there is a lack of reaction, for example during disinfestations“.

In these cases, Sambrian has a social worker dedicated to these questions. She is responsible for supporting tenants with the necessary procedures. At Isabella’s, the Sambrian promised to come back twice. In the meantime, she and her children will have to live with it.
