Dealing with Doubt: My Experience with Alternative Medicine and How Science Saved Me

Let me say right away that I am not in favor of calling all representatives of alternative medicine scammers. Surely, among them there are those who actually help people. It is possible that the properties of many herbs have not been studied, and no one has canceled the placebo effect.

But I’m just the kind of person who believes only in what is confirmed by science. I don’t see anything wrong with this.

When I started dating my girlfriend, she seemed like a healthy, adequate person. We met her when we were standing in line for vaccination.

I had no serious health problems. She too. Therefore, the topic of medicine did not often appear in our communication. Maybe that’s why I missed her “hobby.”

Lisa and I have been together for almost two years. I love her very much and want to continue our relationship. We’ve been living together for a year, I’m planning to propose to her. Or rather, he planned it. Because lately I’ve been starting to doubt its adequacy.

About six months ago she became interested in some teaching. I don’t know exactly what it’s called. This is probably something related to naturopathy, alternative medicine and so on.

As I understand it, the essence of this teaching is that the entire modern pharmaceutical industry is evil. You need to be treated with what grows in nature. And also positive thoughts, positive vibrations and other heresy.

No, I’m also against stuffing a mountain of pills into myself every time I sneeze. For example, if I have a cold, I’ll just sit at home, drink cranberry juice with a cold towel on my forehead. Well, I’ll put some drops in my nose for a couple of days. Without fanaticism. But I won’t take antibiotics. I’m not a fool.

But, it seems to me, if you have hypertension, diabetes or oncology, herbs and conspiracies will be of little use.

But Lisa, who has a higher education and critical thinking, for some reason suddenly became interested in this teaching. And she began to demand that I support her in this. She said that she would prove everything to me.

We didn’t have to wait long for proof. A few weeks later I got very wet in the rain and got sick. Lisa said she would get me back on my feet without a single pill.

They brought her a bunch of jars and powders. I then looked at them while the girl was not at home. I suspect that most of the ointments are Vaseline with various dyes and flavors. The powders and herbs smelled strongly of mint and chamomile.

So, my naturopath got down to business. She smeared some yellow cream on my chest and the bridge of my nose, and put it in my nose. She gave me some kind of drink. My temperature was under thirty-nine. Lisa said she would give me a special powder. It tasted like chalk diluted in water.

Luckily, she left for work an hour later. I took the temperature – thirty-nine point three. My faith in magic powders has died.

I drank paracetamol and slept until almost noon. Then, as usual, I drank cranberry juice, gargled, rinsed my nose and dripped vasoconstrictors. Before Lisa arrived, he destroyed all traces of traditional treatment.

That’s how we lived. In the evening and morning she rubbed me with ointments and gave me some kind of rubbish to drink, and after she left for work I was treated normally. When on the fifth day I had almost recovered, Lisa said:

– Well, I told you that I would get you back on your feet without any pills!

She was happy like a child, and I didn’t have the heart to upset her.

Only after this did my girlfriend strengthen in her faith. Now, as soon as I complain about being unwell, she’s already flying with a bunch of cans at the ready.

I recently broke my back in the gym. She smeared some kind of slimy, stinking liquid on me for three days. On the fourth day I couldn’t stand it anymore, I went to the doctor, he prescribed me treatment, from which I quickly began to recover.

The same happened a couple of times with sprains and bruises. But we must pay tribute to alternative medicine. One ointment for bruises works for them. They quickly turn yellow and go away. During all this time, I have not yet noticed any other positive effects.

Now I don’t know how to tell my girlfriend that this is all nonsense. It seems to me that Lisa will not forgive me when she finds out that I have been deceiving her all this time. But I am beginning to fear for her health and for her loved ones. What if something serious happens, and she convinces herself or, for example, her mother not to go to the doctor, but to be treated with herbs?

Besides, she spends a lot of money on her useless drugs. I wouldn’t want my blood and sweat to waste my earned money on Vaseline and chamomile.
