Dear Danish Democrats: Stop being the useful idiot of the left

This is a discussion post. The post is an expression of the writer’s own position.

It was the Liberals who wrote into the government’s foundation that a CO2 tax must be designed in a way that does not harm the competitiveness of agriculture and does not result in the loss of jobs overall. In our vision for Denmark’s future agriculture, we do not see a winding down, but rather a development towards a more sustainable and innovative agriculture.

I think that one should prepare to negotiate instead of rejecting an inevitable development in the green transition. It is therefore of no use to stand on the sidelines with sour faces and crossed arms, as the Danish Democrats do. It does nothing politically, apart from of course creating headlines.

Wasn’t there something about the Danish Democrats not being a protest party?

We cannot avoid the fact that agriculture is also a factor in the green transition. The Liberal Party, led by Stephanie Lose, has just sat at the end of the table in the negotiations with the green tripartite, in order to ensure the best possible outcome – both for the climate and for agriculture. The green tripartite aims precisely to ensure that everyone’s interests are taken care of.

Even the chairman of Agriculture and Food has called for the bourgeois politicians to sit at the negotiating table. He also did this at the Danish Democrats’ own national meeting. After all, he knows what the Danish Democrats refuse to realize: there is currently a red majority. There is a red majority which, in principle, can introduce a CO2 tax that is so high that it completely destroys agriculture.

If the Liberal Party did not sit in the negotiation room, Enhedslisten and Alternativet did.

Do we seriously believe that agriculture would then be better off?

If we would like to preserve Danish agriculture and also in the future to be able to eat Danish food, then it is time for agriculture to change. We can already see that the demand for protein-rich plant-based alternatives is increasing. In fact, the Danes’ consumption of meat alternatives has increased tenfold since 2010. Of course, we still have to produce meat in Denmark, and of course people must decide for themselves what they want to eat.

But if the demand for alternatives is there, then it is obvious to seize a good business opportunity.

Development, not settlement

I am sure that our skilled farmers will take advantage of this and similar business opportunities, so that the green transition will create jobs instead of costing them. This is what we mean when we say that we want to develop agriculture instead of dismantling it.

If we all behaved as the Danish Democrats do, it would not be possible. Then it was wound up because, with their martyr mentality, they wanted to leave all the initiative to those on the far left, who get all their voters from people who have never seen a cow in their lives.

I don’t think agriculture can benefit from that. And Agriculture & Food, by the way, doesn’t think so either. So, dear Danish Democrats: now sit down at the table. Now stop being the useful idiot of Enhedslisten and let’s make an agreement that helps secure agriculture in a climate-responsible world.

A new agreement on CO2 tax can also be the springboard to invest in green technology and innovation, which can create new job opportunities and increase productivity in the sector.

Denmark has historically been a leading country in green innovation, and we have a unique potential to continue this development – also in agriculture. By investing in green conversion and supporting farmers in the transition to more sustainable production methods or products, we can create a win-win situation where both the climate and the economy benefit.

In Denmark, we have the potential to be a global leader in sustainable agriculture, and this is a position we should strive to maintain and strengthen. The Left does not want to dismantle agriculture, but rather to create the framework for a positive development, where we both take care of the climate challenges AND the development of agriculture. Venstre takes responsibility for ensuring that we also have good Danish agriculture in the future.
