Death 11,400; Erdogan that everything is under control

ISTANBUL – The death toll in earthquake-ravaged southern Turkey and northern Syria has surpassed 11,400. According to official figures, 11,416 people died. Despite the severe cold, the rescue operation is progressing for thousands trapped under more than 6000 collapsed buildings.

The World Health Organization has concluded that the total number of deaths may exceed 20,000. A similar earthquake in the region in 1999 claimed the lives of 17,000 people. President Tayyip Erdogan said 8,754 people had died in Turkey. Erdogan visited Kahramanmaras, an earthquake-hit area in southern Turkey. Erdogan stated that there was some problem in the rescue operation on the first day of the disaster and things are currently under control.

Aid from countries including India started reaching both countries. There are complaints that emergency medical aid is delayed in reaching the disaster area due to damaged roads. A section of people protested alleging delay in the rescue operation. Erdogan urged people to ignore ‘provocatives’ and follow official announcements.

There were 3 strong earthquakes on Monday. Turkey also reported 285 aftershocks. The World Health Organization stated that 2.3 crore people have been affected in both countries. This includes 14 lakh children. 10 provinces of Turkey have been declared affected.
