The death of the famous Quebec astrophysicist and popularizer of science Hubert Reeves prompted numerous tributes from political figures, showing to what extent he had marked the collective universe.

“Quebec today loses an outstanding popularizer, a renowned astrophysicist,” Prime Minister François Legault began in a tweet.

“Hubert Reeves knew how to find the words to make us understand humanity and infinity. He leaves today as he came, as stardust,” he said, offering his condolences to the scientist’s family.

For his part, the interim leader of the Liberal Party of Quebec also paid tribute to a “great scientist, a great Quebecer”.

“Passionate and committed to several causes, he left his mark on Quebec, the scientific community and many of us,” Marc Tanguay wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

“He will have been a beacon for humanity. He will remain a star in the firmament of the greats of this world, a wise man and a great Quebecer,” declared the PQ MP for the Magdalen Islands, Joël Arseneau.

Its leader, Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, said he was saddened to learn of the scientist’s death. “Quebec today loses an astrophysicist who enormously advanced the scientific knowledge of humanity,” he stressed.

Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois, for his part, offered his condolences to Mr. Reeves’ family, but also to “those who discovered the stars through the lens of a great Quebecer.”

“Hubert Reeves is making his last journey to the confines of the cosmos,” announced the parliamentary leader and co-spokesperson for Québec solidaire.

Proof of its international influence, French people have also expressed their condolences. This is particularly the case of politician Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

“Hubert Reeves is gone. Everything else seems strange afterward. Thought focused on the best in humanity sees the ugliness of the crude people who surround us and claim to govern our lives,” he said.
