His books helped to popularize knowledge about the cosmos: Hubert Reeves, a Franco-Canadian astrophysicist who looked like a Gallic druid, passed away this Friday, October 13, 2023 at the age of 91. One of his four children, Benoît, revealed the sad news on Facebook: “My entire family joins me in the pain of having to announce to you that our dear father has left to join the stars.“The scientist died in Paris, leaving behind the history of the Universe, the passion of his life, but also one of the most ardent defenders of the blue planet.

An appetite for knowledge of the universe which had consequences on his married life. “His career, which had the effect of a powerful drug, led to the failure of his first marriage and left him in a deep emotional imbalance,” says Radio Canada. Hubert Reeves was in fact married to the researcher and artist Francine Brunel, mother of his four children Gilles, Nicolas, Benoît and Evelyne.

Malicorne, the astrophysicist’s refuge

Hubert Reeves then rebuilt his life with journalist Camille Scoffier and they settled in Paris. However, they decided to treat themselves to a second home, an old farm located in Malicorne, a small village in Puisaye in the north of Burgundy-Franche-Comté. “Malicorne has become an indispensable refuge for me,” he said, he who wrote the book Malicorne, Reflections of an Observer of Nature and which won the Literary Prize of the city of Limoges in 1991. La Puisaye was in indeed an infinite source of happiness for Hubert Reeves, a French natural region located on the borders of Orléanais, Nivernais and Burgundy which captivates with its forests and ponds in small humid and green valleys.

A region which had also won over a French music star: Julien Clerc. In TV 2 weekshe declared: “You know, I have always been close to nature. When I lived with Miou-Miou, we settled in Yonne with 300 sheep!“During their marriage, the two artists first lived at the Métairie Bruyère near Parly, then at the Château des Gouttes near Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye.

Hubert Reeves, a transmitter of knowledge

A passionate person who knew how to pass on his knowledge like no other. “Hubert knew how to make things simple, he knew how to make people dream, he had this artistic fiber, this poetic side with this little Quebecois accent. He managed to sow seeds that make people dream“, Eric Lagadec, astrophysicist at the Observatoire de la Côte d’Azur-UCA, told AFP. “He inspired an entire generation of human beings and professional astronomers“, added Eric Lagadec who discovered his vocation by reading one of Hubert Reeves’ works.
