It is with great emotion that the members of the Court of Cassation learned of the death of Renaud Van Ruymbeke, an emblematic figure of the independence of Justice.

The Court of Cassation shares this emotion with the entire judiciary but also with a very large number of French people.

Throughout his career, Renaud Van Ruymbeke served as an investigating judge.

He devoted himself to it with rigor and integrity, bringing a democratic vision of the office of the judge.

Through his teaching activities at the National School of Magistrates (ENM), Renaud Van Ruymbeke was able to transmit to several generations of magistrates his sense of commitment in the search for truth.

A resolute player in the fight against corruption, he signed the Geneva Appeal on October 1, 1996, alongside seven other major foreign judges, calling for European judicial harmonization in the fight against tax fraud and money laundering. ‘money.

Having retired in 2019, he continued to defend an active European project in the fight against tax havens and the various forms of associated crime, a project that he recalled was inseparable from the defense of the State of right.

The Court of Cassation sends its very sincere condolences and deep sympathy to his wife, Mrs. Bernadette Van Ruymbeke, honorary advisor in office at the social chamber of the Court until last June and president of the ENM jury, as well as to his children and all his loved ones.
