According to official information, the severe storm has so far caused ten deaths and 23 injuries in Ukraine. Two children were among the injured, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko wrote on his Telegram channel on Tuesday morning. The situation is worst in the Odessa region of southern Ukraine. In the evening, President Volodymyr Zelenskyj spoke of five deaths in his video message.

A snowstorm over the Black Sea has hit Ukraine hard, already affected by Russia’s war of aggression. In the Odessa region, there was a power outage in hundreds of towns on Monday, and roads had to be cleared with armored equipment and partially closed due to snowdrifts. According to Klymenko, hundreds of stuck vehicles had been towed by Tuesday morning, including 24 buses and 17 ambulances. In the Odessa region alone there were five dead and 15 injured.

There were also victims from the snowstorm in the neighboring region of Mykolaiv and in the northeastern Ukrainian region of Kharkiv. The south of Russia and the Russian-annexed Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea are also affected by the storm. According to media reports, the fighting in eastern Ukraine between the Ukrainian defenders and the Russian occupying forces is continuing despite the onset of winter.
