The heads of two local governments met for the first time today over the issue of ‘Gimpo’s incorporation into Seoul’, a hot potato in the political world.

First, it was agreed to create a ‘joint research group’ to analyze the effects, but Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon expressed differences in temperature, saying, ‘It is still a bit early to say anything.’

Gimpo Mayor Kim Byung-soo visited Seoul City Hall this afternoon and met with Mayor Oh Se-hoon.

It was a meeting in which Gimpo City proposed to be incorporated into Seoul City.

In a meeting that lasted about 40 minutes, Mayor Kim said he fully explained the necessity and justification for incorporating Seoul.

He emphasized that since Gimpo is a living area in Seoul, it is reasonable for Gyeonggi-do to be incorporated into Seoul if Gyeonggi-do is divided into North and South, and it is also beneficial to the city of Seoul.

″We can open the maritime era and then create the ‘Great Han River’ that can be developed all the way to the mouth of the Han River. There is still a lot of usable land left in Gimpo. So the limited land in Seoul can be utilized in Gimpo.″

They showed their enthusiasm by saying they would immediately hold a residents’ meeting starting tomorrow and conduct a face-to-face opinion poll among 1,000 citizens at the end of this month, but they failed to provide the basis for the blueprint.

″<김포가 서울에 들어갔을 때 편익들(에 관한) 데이터가 없으신데?> Does that really require data? I think you can probably find out if you ask the mayor of Seoul.”

On the other hand, Mayor Oh Se-hoon revealed a temperature difference.

″I think it’s still too early to say anything without in-depth research and analysis.″

Seoul City and Gimpo City decided to form a ‘joint research group’ to first analyze specific pros and cons.

As the theory of incorporation is also being raised in other neighboring cities such as Guri, Hanam, and Goyang, Seoul City plans to form a separate ‘Mega City’ research task force.

Mayor Oh said he would see the analysis results expected around the end of this year, and there was no need to rush the public opinion collection process.

″With all that information being shared, perhaps a procedure to ask (residents) their opinions could also be carried out.″

When asked whether the sudden move to reorganize administrative districts was motivated by political intentions, Mayor Oh said, “That is quite burdensome,” and that it may be helpful to discuss it at length until after the general election.
