Debate: Recent Hamas Attacks against Israel and the Global Response – Insights, Analysis, and Context

This Monday, October 9, Julien Bal received several columnists on his set: Céline Aron, entrepreneur and CEO of So blonde management; Jean Kitenge, entrepreneur; Michel Kacenelenbogen, director of the “Le Public” theater; and Jean-Marc Gheraille, antenna director of LN24.

The theme of the day was obviously the recent attacks by Hamas against Israel, and the response that follows. Several questions animated the debate: Is there a risk of increased anti-Semitism in Belgium? Is Hamas emulated in our country?

Manuel Abramowicz, host of the RésistanceS site, came to give his insight and provide some context. Before going any further in the debate, he wanted to point out that we must be careful not to mix anti-Semitism, anti-Zionism and hostility to the current Israeli government. Words are important. “What is happening at the moment is not a war of religion,” he wants to point out.

Could this attack cause an increase in Islamophobia among us? It’s obvious, according to him.

Two weights, two measures

“We notice that at the political level, the States of the European Union have chosen their camp. At Berlaimont (editor’s note: the European Commission), there is the Israeli flag which takes pride of place,” notes the guest. “I still point out that Israel is led by an ultranationalist party, the Likud, by the local racist extreme right, from a party that was considered terrorist by the State of Israel.”

A flag which, however, represents the country, not the current government, recalls Julien Bal. “Yes… But we were asked to boycott Austria when the far right was in power. I still see double standards,” observes Abramowicz.

Horrible images

The images that arrive are terrible, and they continue to arrive. “It’s horrible. I was disgusted when I saw them,” breathes the RésistanceS host. “But I also have in my mind the images of more than 275 Palestinian children who have been killed since January.”

”It’s horrible, it’s terrorism, it must be condemned. But killing civilians with bombs and drones is also terrorism. It’s called state terrorism,” he concludes.
