Debonairs ‘Mzansi’s Fave Pizza’ Claim Rejected | News24

South African pizza chain Debonairs has been compelled to withdraw its advertising claim of being “Mzansi’s Fave Pizza” following a ruling by the Advertising Regulatory Bureau of South Africa (ARBSA). The decision, made public on March 19, 2026, stems from a challenge initiated by competitor Ocean Basket, according to reporting by News24.

Ocean Basket contested Debonairs’ assertion, arguing that the claim lacked sufficient substantiation. The ARBSA found in favor of Ocean Basket, stating that Debonairs failed to provide adequate evidence demonstrating it held the position as the most favored pizza brand in South Africa. The regulatory body directed Debonairs to cease using the “Mzansi’s Fave Pizza” slogan in its advertising materials.

The ARBSA’s ruling highlights the importance of verifiable claims in advertising, particularly those relating to market leadership. The bureau’s decision underscores the need for companies to possess robust data supporting assertions about their position within the competitive landscape.

Debonairs, a subsidiary of Famous Brands, has not publicly commented on the ARBSA’s decision as of March 23, 2026. Famous Brands has yet to announce any intention to appeal the ruling or outline a revised advertising strategy.
