Deceased Ukrainian Refugee who Escaped War in His Homeland and Sought Asylum in Belgium Discovered on Roadside

A man from Voer, aged 63, was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Slenaken, just across the Belgian-Dutch border, on Easter Monday. He was found dead on the side of the road. A 50-year-old man from Eijsden-Margraten in Dutch Limburg was arrested for questioning by the police. Dutch authorities were alerted to the incident when they received information that an injured individual was lying on the road. The police discovered the car involved in the collision and apprehended the driver. According to Het Nieuwsblad, the victim was a Ukrainian man who had recently moved to Belgium with his son after fleeing the Ukrainian war. An employer of the victim expressed their condolences and described the tragedy of the event. The victim was last seen walking to a nearby brewery, but it is believed that he was struck by the car on his route. The driver fled the scene and left the victim for dead before being identified by their license plate.

Dutch police were informed around 9:15 p.m. on Monday that a seriously injured person was lying on the road. Apart from the victim, no one was present. The investigation allowed the police to find the car involved in the collision and its driver was arrested.

According to Het Nieuwsblad, the victim was a Ukrainian who lived in Les Fourons. According to the man who employed him in a fruit and vegetable company, the victim had fled the war in Ukraine with his son in March 2022 to settle in Belgium: “It’s tragic”, commented Eric Loops to our colleagues from the Nieuwsblad.

He recounts what happened: “The man left work around 7 p.m. and left on foot in the direction of the brewery, one kilometer from here… He left the premises at 9 p.m., but he must have been mowed from behind on the way. The driver obviously left him for dead.

It was finally a license plate found on the spot that made it possible to identify the fugitive.
