Decentralization: UNDP and Cameroon on the Drive of Local Development

Strategic tools produced for stakeholders of the Decentralisation process in Cameroon has been presented to the public.

The document is the product of a study carried out by the United Nations Development Programme, (UNDP) in Cameroon and the Ministry of Decentralization and Local Development.

The recommendations are expected to help, Regional, City and Municipal councils improve their planning, financing and development strategy.

The Resident Representative of the UNDP in Cameroon, Aliou Mamadou Dia officially handed over the document to the Minister of Decentralization and Local Development, Georges Elanga Obam during a ceremony in Yaounde this Tuesday April 25, 2023.

The UNDP Resident Representative, Aliou Mamadou Dia explained that the tools that have taken into account Cameroon’s National Development strategy for 2020 – 2030, seeks to improve financing for local development. It also strives to localise the sustainable development goals in line with the development needs of local authorities.

The Minister of Decentralization and Local Development, Georges Elanga Obam saluted the support project for the acceleration and furthering of decentralization and local development which seeks to strengthen the capacities of grassroot actors.

He called on development partners to support and finance the project that is expected to steer socioeconomic development of local authorities, governance, promote citizen participation and accountability in the management of decentralized local authorities.
