The Togolese government declared a state of “security emergency” in Savannah, the region in the far north of the country that witnessed two unprecedented terrorist attacks in this country. Savannah.
For his part, Information Minister Akoda Iwadan said during a press conference that “the security emergency is an exceptional measure necessitated by a specific situation. The Savannah region is under terrorist attacks and the state needs to act quickly and effectively.”
He added that “this state of emergency will be imposed in accordance with the constitution for a period of three months, which can be extended with the approval of the National Assembly.”
In May, 8 soldiers were killed and 13 wounded in a terrorist attack targeting them in northern Togo.
