Decoding the Vuelta Bonuses: Distribution and Impact on Top Contenders

2023-08-18 08:22:02

The Vuelta starts on August 26 with a great battle announced between several top names in the peloton including Remco Evenepoel, Primoz Roglic, Jonas Vingegaard and Geraint Thomas. With such a plateau, the bonuses might well have their influence. How will they be distributed? We take stock.

As usual, each online stage offers ten, six and four bonus seconds to the first three. The inaugural team time trial and the individual of the 10th stage are not affected.

Apart from that, each stage will also see the riders competing for three, two and a second in a sprint during the stage. Nine times, it will be an intermediate sprint counting for the green jersey. In the other ten stages in line, it will be a bonus sprint. Like what we saw at the Tour de France, these bonus sprints will be at the top of a climb, more or less long. Generally, it is the last difficulty when the arrival is not planned at the summit and the penultimate when the arrival takes place at the summit.
