Deep hole in the ground: Suddenly the grass disappeared far down

An approximately six meter deep hole has closed part of the golf course at Ørnehøj Golf Club in Gistrup.

The hole – a landfall hole – has occurred at hole 23 of the course. Right on the edge of the fairway.

Goldklubben’s managing director Mads Rom estimates that the hole is four meters in circumference and six meters deep.

The hole is cone-shaped and larger at the bottom.

The golf club has closed the part of the course that goes past hole 23.

The grass disappeared six meters down

Mads Rom explains that there appear to be traces of water at the bottom of the approximately six meter deep hole.

– It seems that a water vein has run, which has washed away soil and sand, and then this hole has appeared.

It was one of the golf club’s greenkeepers who discovered the hole on Tuesday.

– He could see that the grass had sunk in a slightly larger area. He didn’t think there was a well there. When he wanted to examine it more closely with a shovel, the grass disappeared and sank six meters down. Fortunately, he had not gone out of his way, but was on the right side, says Mads Rom.

The greenkeeper then brought the others into the clubhouse so they could also see the hole.

– He had a little difficulty getting us to believe that there was such a big gap, says Mads Rom.

He says that the club’s greenkeepers are around on Wednesday to check the area for similar holes, but so far nothing has been found.

However, part of the course will be closed – probably – until Thursday, when the course has been fully examined and the hole at hole 23 repaired.

Can occur anywhere

It is the transport company Kristian Rytter that has been given the task of repairing the hole.

Here, engineer Esben Olesen explains that you fill the hole with sand and have a long arm with a tamper, which is used to fill the hole with sand.

– 15 to 20 cubic meters of sand must be used immediately, but it can be more if the bottom or sides give way and reveal a larger hole when we start with the rammer, he says.

Esben Olesen’s guess is that it is a crack in a chalk layer that has pulled sand away, which has created a pocket under the grass layer.

– It has probably been in the works for a long time. It’s not something that just washes away in a few days. The fact that a lot of water has come in recently has made the upper – remaining – layer heavy, and then it has fallen down, he explains.

In principle, similar holes can occur anywhere, explains Esben Olesen.

Sinkholes can also occur where there has been mining in the past, where lime has been washed away naturally, or where a block of ice – from the ice age – in the underground has melted away.
