JANNIK Sinner successfully beat Australian Christopher O’Connell 6-4 and 6-3 to advance to the quarter-finals of the Miami Open, Wednesday (27/3) WIB.
The second seed from Italy used a variety of difficult strokes against O’Connell, from powerful backhands to taking the ball early and running forward, to advance to his fourth consecutive quarter-final at the Miami Open after 1 hour 51 minutes.
“Today was much different (from Sunday’s match). It was much windier, so I had to adjust a little,” said Sinner, as broadcast by ATP, Wednesday (27/3).
“I had a few chances before I even broke, so I knew that I was doing the right thing. I tried to serve really solidly. He made some mistakes in important moments and I think today was the key,” he continued.

The crucial moment for Sinner occurred when they were 1-3, 0/30 behind. Last year’s finalist rallied four points in a row to avoid a double break and then won five of six games to take a one-set lead after 58 minutes.

Sinner broke O’Connell’s serve in the Australian’s first service game of the second set and built his momentum, maintaining the lead in extended rallies and maintaining an aggressive baseline position to advance.
“He started very well, I made some mistakes.
“When you have a break down especially early on, it’s always difficult, also mentally,” Sinner said.
The world number three was just two points behind on serve in the second set to improve to 1-1 in the head to head against the 29-year-old, avenging his loss in Atlanta in 2021 to O’Connell.
In the Miami Open quarter-finals, Sinner will meet Czech Rep. Tomas Machac who won 6-3, 6-3 over Italian Matteo Arnaldi. (Ant/Z-1)
