NOTTINGHAM, England (AP) — Beatriz Haddad Maia said goodbye at the first opportunity to defend her title at the Nottingham Open.

Having reached the semifinals of the French Open last week, the Brazilian lost 6-4, 6-3 to lucky loser Daria Snigur in the first round on Tuesday.

Snigur entered the main draw following fellow Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko had to withdraw with injury hours before the match. However, as the 2019 Wimbledon junior champion, she proved a difficult match for Haddad Maia, the tournament’s second seed on grass.

Third-seeded Magda Linette of Poland advanced to the round of 16 with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Australia’s Olivia Gadecki. For her part, the Italian Camila Giorgi (7th seed) scored 7-6 (5), 6-2 of the American Madison Brengle.
