Deimos may have split off from the Red Planet

So far, it has been assumed that Deimos – one of the two moons of Mars – was “captured” by the red planet. As an asteroid, it is said to have approached Mars. Then he mightn’t get away from him because of its gravity. Measurement data collected by the “Hope” space probe now indicate a different origin of the moon.

“Hope” is a space probe of the United Arab Emirates and has now dedicated itself to Deimos following its actual mission. There she examined the moon of Mars with her instruments. It turns out that Deimos is said to be made of the same material that is found on the surface of Mars.

Hessa Almatroushi, scientific director of the mission, now explains in the science magazine “Nature” how one can deduce Deimos’ origin from this. According to this, the moon of Mars should once have been a part of Mars. It may have been erupted in a collision with another celestial body. It is always possible – following all, this is how the moon on earth was formed.
