For over a decade, a dedicated DeKalb County organization has been tirelessly working to ensure that even the youngest learners have access to the transformative power of books. Through their unwavering commitment, they’ve distributed nearly 200,000 books to thousands of children, fostering a love of reading and igniting imaginations.
A Library in Every Bag: Empowering children Through Literacy
Volunteers dedicate countless hours sorting, cleaning, and packing donated books into colorful bags. Each bag becomes a treasure chest, filled with stories waiting to be discovered. Cindy Jaret, a key figure in this initiative, explains, “We began distributing books and reading to children in Title 1 schools, Pre-K classes in DeKalb County. The next year, we expanded into the Atlanta Public School System.”
“some of these children do not have any books at home, some only have a few. Some may have many books, but its still limited in what they have in the home,” Jaret shares, highlighting the crucial role their initiative plays in bridging the literacy gap.”They can’t keep their hands off the bags. They’re pulling out the books,they’re opening the books and looking at them. They’re very, very excited to get books! They love books. And of course, it makes the volunteers feel very happy and so special.”
