NEWARK, Del. – Delaware placed five players in double figures and had two finish with double-doubles as the Blue Hens defeated the Longwood women’s basketball team, 81-55, at the Bob Carpenter Center Thursday.

Chloe Wilson led all players with 18 points and 12 rebounds while Darrionna Howard tallied 13 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Blue Hens (1-0), who were picked to finish fourth in the Colonial Athletic Association.

The Lancers (0-2), playing their second of three games in the opening week of action, got 16 points, two rebounds and one assist from Janay Turner, 11 points, four rebounds and three assists from Anne-Hamilton LeRoy and 10 points, one rebound and one assist from Adriana Shipp-Davis in the loss.

“Tough one tonight,” said Longwood head coach Erika Lang-Montgomery. “We are learning how to compete for 40 minutes. I was impressed with our rebounding in the first half.  Malea was impressive on the boards tonight. We have to work harder to do that for both halves. We are excited to get back home o Farmville for our home opener on Sunday.”

Brown pitched in with seven points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Freshman forward Otaifo Esenabhalu scored the first basket of the game before Delaware ran off nine consecutive points and did not look back. UD led 18-13 after the first quarter 42-27 at halftime and 59-37 after the third quarter.

The Lancers hung around in the first half and trailed 16-13 late in the opening 10 minutes, using a 9-0 run to close the gap. Shipp-Davis had two 3-pointers in the run while LeRoy canned another. Turner later pulled Longwood to within 27-20 with 3:15 remaining in the first half with yet another from downtown, but Delaware closed with a 15-7 stretch.

The Blue Hens outrebounded the Lancers, 56-39, and shot 48.6 (34-for-70) percent for the game, limiting Longwood to just 29.6 (21-for-71) percent.

Klarke Sconiers just missed a third double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds for Delaware, who dominated in the paint as a team, 48-22.

Next up, the Lancers play their first-ever game at the brand-new Joan Perry Brock Center Saturday when they host Division II Chowan at noon on Sunday.
