Delhaize, which belongs to the Ahold Delhaize group, provoked an outcry in early March by announcing that it wanted to franchise all its Belgian stores. According to the unions, this would eventually be accompanied by the loss of thousands of jobs across the country, in parallel with an inevitable deterioration in the working conditions of the staff. The large-scale strikes, however, lost momentum over the weeks, the management having obtained in court the power to ban the blocking pickets.
