At 8:00 a.m., around twenty employees of Delhaize d’Enghien closed the supermarket and left in protest, said the National Center for Employees and Managers (CNE). The picket was lifted around 11:00 a.m. after the arrival of a bailiff.

Delhaize: still no agreement after a new conciliation meeting

In Mons, around forty people gathered in front of the lion supermarket around 9 a.m. to distribute leaflets to customers. “A new ordinance was issued this morning, for Hainaut only, stipulating that we cannot prevent access to the site”, commented the national secretary of the CNE for the commercial sector, Myriam Djegham, present among the protesters. “Once again, the bailiff has an exaggerated interpretation of the judgment and deduces from it that we cannot be on the territory of Delhaize. This is overzealous. The police advised us to place ourselves on the sidewalk opposite”, off the land owned by the company, she said.

In Brussels, the stores of Chazal (Schaerbeek), Arbre Ballon (Jette), Debroux (Auderghem) and Boondael (Ixelles) were also the target of actions, as was that of Flagey (Ixelles).

A hundred people were gathered in front of this last Saturday morning. The collective supporting the protest initiative called for a long-term boycott of Delhaize “until the social conflict is resolved in favor of the workers”. The store, however, remained open throughout the action and no customers were prevented from entering.

“It is important that the boycott can be sustained and does not lose its momentum. This is why we have created this support collective”, declared Thomas Engert of the ACV-CSC. According to the support collective, the solidarity actions carried out in front of the stores in Schaerbeek and Uccle have been crowned with success. “The Delhaizes in Brussels have already lost many customers. And they won’t be coming back.”

Delhaize: “We are faced with a much tougher vision of capitalism, which we are not used to in Belgium”

The “nine stores are more or less affected. We are doing everything to guarantee their access and keep them open”, for his part commented the spokesperson for the sign, Roel Dekelver, specifying that the bailiffs sent are content to ” observe the events”.

The group announced on March 7 that it wanted to franchise all of its own-operated stores in Belgium. Since then, the social conflict has persisted.
