Delhaize Workers’ Strike in Mons: Store Closure and Union Discontent

For months now, the social climate in the Delhaize stores has been tense to say the least. Between legal proceedings, awareness-raising actions aimed at customers or even unexpected closures of sites, the union discontent continues. This Thursday morning, it is the Delhaize de Mons, located Chaussée du Roeulx, which is closed to customers. A decision taken this morning at 10 a.m. following a new event.

“The store had opened its doors normally, a few customers were present,” explains Rosario Sprio, CNE delegate. “But the workers have had enough, the cup is full. This Wednesday, a heated altercation broke out between a manager and one of our colleagues, also a manager. He was insulted for being a striker. The conflict drags on and tensions are growing. It was the last straw.”

Around 10 a.m., the workers decided to leave the store. “Almost all of the workers decided to follow. Things are going too far. We don’t know what will happen next. The manager involved, author of the insults, did not show up for duty on Thursday. The management is obviously waiting to have its version of the facts. Will the Mons store remain closed all day? Hard to say.

“As long as there is no bailiff on site, the doors will remain closed. If the bailiff arrives and serves us, the picket will be lifted. We would also like to thank the customers: the car park is practically deserted, many people turn around on their own.” In the meantime, it is better to go to another store, Delhaize or not…
