Indian security personnel surrounded a planned opposition protest site in Delhi on Sunday to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over a controversial voter list revision. Led by Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi, the demonstration marks a major political challenge for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata party.
Security Lockdown and the March to Ramlila Maidan
Authorities deployed dozens of security personnel armed with batons and shields, backed by riot control vehicles, around the designated protest venue in central Delhi. Police established traffic diversions across the capital ahead of a nearly 1.5-kilometer march culminating at the Ramlila Maidan.
Opposition parties, student organizations, and the youth-led Cockroach Janta party organized the demonstration following near-daily demonstrations since last month. Senior police officer Rohit Rajbir told the ANI news agency that proper arrangements were in place along the march route to manage the large gatherings arriving at the venue.

The Dispute Over Voter List Revisions
The confrontation stems from an investigation published by the Indian Express in September, which revealed that two deputy election commissioners raised internal concerns regarding voter list revisions, registration procedures, and digital systems. The ongoing revision process, initiated last year, removed more than 130 million names from voter registries.
That total includes 28 million deceased individuals, 63 million who relocated, and 30 million who could not be traced by authorities. Opposition parties argue that these deletions disproportionately target Muslim voters and other minorities unlikely to support the ruling Hindu nationalist party.
The Election Commission denied favoring any political faction, stating that voters whose names were incorrectly deleted can re-enrol. Meanwhile, the BJP accused opposition organizers of undermining democratic institutions by questioning legitimate administrative processes.
Political Stakes for the Modi Government
Analysts note that these youth-led demonstrations and growing support for the opposition represent the worst crisis for Narendra Modi since he came to power in 2014. Despite the intense public pushback, the federal government remains stable, and the next general election is not due until 2029.
