Delhi registers 3,194 new cases of Covid, positivity rate climbs to 4.59 pc

The huge spike in new cases in recent days in Delhi is on record amid a significant increase in cases of the new Omicron variant of the coronavirus in the city.

The nation’s capital on Sunday reported 3,194 new cases of Covid, the largest single-day increase since May 20, and one death as the positivity rate rose to 4.59%, according to data shared by the service health of the city.

As part of the Gradual Response Action Plan, approved by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority, if the positivity rate is above five percent for two consecutive days, a “red” alert may be triggered, resulting in a “total curfew” and the cessation of most economic activities.

The coronavirus case tally on Sunday was 17% higher than the 2,716 infections recorded the day before.

Delhi had reported 3,231 cases as of May 20 last year with a 5.50% positivity rate. No less than 233 deaths were recorded that day.
On Friday and Thursday, 1,796 and 1,313 cases were recorded with a positivity rate of 1.73% and 2.44% respectively, according to official figures. The daily tally of cases on Wednesday, Tuesday and Monday was 923, 496 and 331, respectively.

The death toll from the coronavirus in the city has risen to 25,109.
The cumulative number of cases on Sunday stood at 14.54,121.

Over 14.19 lakh patients have recovered from the infection.
Nine deaths from COVID-19 were reported in the city in December last year and seven in November, according to official data. Delhi had recorded four deaths from Covid in October and five in September.

A total of 69,650 tests – 59,897 RT-PCR tests – were performed the day before, according to the bulletin.
