Demand for serial production AM is growing, investment in 2 RenAM 500Q

The American supplier Innovative 3D Manufacturing, has again expanded the number of metal printers, this time with two RenAM 500Q systems from Renishaw. This brings the total number of 3D metal printers available to the company to 6. The reason for the investment is that customers are starting to ask for production parts.

Innovative 3D Manufacturing is originally a prototyping company. Since 2016, it has been supplying prototypes, supplemented with production and consultancy activities for customers in the aviation, medical and defense industries, among others. The company is both AS9100 (aviation) and ISO 13485 (medical industry) certified. Additive manufacturing is mainly used when prototypes are too complex to make with CNC technology, for example. Innovative 3D Manufacturing recognized that to remain competitive in a growing rapid prototyping market, it needed to find the technology to deliver high-quality parts within the customer’s deadline.

Growing demand for AM parts

In addition, it has recently noticed that customers are also starting to ask for production parts in addition to prototypes. They have applications for series production with additive manufacturing. It has therefore been decided to invest further in AM capacity, also because quality requirements are increasing and delivery times are decreasing. Innovative 3D Manufacturing already had a relationship with Renishaw through the UK group’s metrology solutions and single laser systems and, following extensive testing, has now invested in two RenAM 500Q multi-laser systems. “The platform size of the system, combined with the four lasers, means our team can do more jobs,” explains Chris Beck, owner and manager of operations. “The sieving facility on board helps us improve our operations. The sieving and recycling system allows us to recycle powder and clean systems quickly, making the process of preparing a system between two print jobs much smoother.” This helps with both prototyping and series production orders to start a new job quickly.

A total of six AM systems

In addition to the two new RenAM 500Q systems, the US company has 4 metal printers with a single laser source from Renishaw. The total capacity is therefore 6 AM systems. In addition to pure 3D printing, the supplier now also provides additional services requested by customers, such as the removal of support structures and heat treatments.
