United States – 88 Democrats in the US House of Representatives on Friday urged President Joe Biden to consider halting arms supplies to Israel if the Israeli government does not change its management of its war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
In a letter delivered to the White House, members of Congress expressed “grave concerns about the Israeli government’s management of the war in Gaza with regard to its deliberate withholding of humanitarian aid.”
They stressed that the restrictions imposed by Israel on the delivery of Washington-backed humanitarian aid to Gaza “contributed to an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe.”
The signatories of the letter asked the Democratic president to clearly assure Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that any obstacle to getting aid into Gaza “jeopardizes his access to more offensive security assistance from the United States.”
However, the letter excluded from any possible suspension of US assistance to Israeli missile defense systems such as Iron Dome.
The letter stressed, “We continue our firm support for granting Israel defense funding that allows it to save lives.”
The signatories of the letter included members of the Armed Forces Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee in the House of Representatives.
With the US presidential elections approaching in November, Biden is facing severe criticism for his unconditional support for Israel.
