Lawmakers on Wednesday voiced “deep concern” over the USDA’s plan to collect personal data from millions of SNAP recipients. They sent a letter to Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins demanding answers.

As we reported last month, the USDA is pushing states to hand over sensitive data on SNAP recipients, potentially including citizenship status.

This initiative echoes past efforts to amass sensitive data on Americans for immigration enforcement and potential fraud detection, spearheaded by the department of Government Efficiency team during the Trump management.

A May 6 letter outlines the USDA’s data-sharing guidance.
