Dengue fever: 1 indigenous case recorded in the Alpes-Maritimes, 5 in the Var – LINFO.re

The Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Regional Health Agency reported these contaminations on Wednesday. Targeted mosquito control operations have been launched.

Contaminations identified in the south of France

The dengue is a disease transmitted by tiger mosquito. It causes high fever, fatigue, headaches and muscle aches. Since mid-August, several indigenous cases have been detected in the south of France. Wednesday August 24, the Regional Health Agency (ARS) of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur affirmed that a patient was identified in the Alpes-Maritimes and five in the Was.

No serious cases

An autochthonous case means that the virus was transmitted by a tiger mosquito infected in the territory. The five patients in the Was are all found “in the same sector of the municipality” of Fayence. This means that the virus is circulating in this area. However, the cases identified in two neighboring departments “don’t seem related”, according to the ARS of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. Furthermore, no serious symptoms were reported.

Mosquito control actions

To prevent the disease from spreading, the ARS claimed to have piloted mosquito control operations of the Mediterranean coast. The intervention was mainly carried out “in the districts of residence of the cases” and in the places they frequented “during their period of contagiousness”. The goal is to eradicate “potentially infected adult mosquitoes” and of “remove breeding sites to limit the proliferation of mosquitoes in these areas”.

Avoid the proliferation of mosquitoes around your home

The health agency also called for the responsibility of individuals to avoid the proliferation of mosquitoes around their homes. It is strongly recommended to protect yourself from their bites. In case of signs suggestive of dengueabove all “if they appear within fifteen days of returning from a trip to the tropics”it is best to consult a doctor as soon as possible.
