Dengue Outbreak in Brazil: Causes, Symptoms, and Prevention Strategies

2024-03-21 18:14:00

So far, 656 dengue-related deaths have been confirmed in Brazil and another 1,025 are under investigation. The viral illness is often mild and not everyone infected becomes ill.

Dengue is prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions of South America, the Caribbean, Asia, Africa and Australia. The virus is transmitted by the yellow fever mosquito and the tiger mosquito.

The number of infections worldwide has increased rapidly in recent decades, particularly in urban areas. Heavy rainfall and high temperatures in recent months could be behind the increase. Under such conditions, the yellow fever mosquito develops particularly well. The tiger mosquito, for its part, has adapted well to urban environments.
