Dennis Jackson, widely known as The Virginia Gentleman of Pulaski, passed away early on the morning of October 31, 2026. His journey began during a blizzard on February 24, 1947, when he was born to Fred A. and Sadie M. Jackson of Max Meadows. Local farmers cleared the roads with tractors so doctors could reach the family home.
Building Southwest Virginia Through Engines and Construction
For 30 years, Jackson held a Class B Contractor license, leading a crew that constructed numerous homes across southwest Virginia. His mechanical aptitude extended far beyond residential building. At White Motors in Dublin—subsequently renamed Volvo Trucks North America—he was the foreman of a large department, and he also supervised a team of mechanics working for Kenny Carter Engine Rebuilders. He also operated Dennis Jackson farms, raising beef cattle.
Automotive engineering defined much of his life’s work. Alongside his wife, Janet, he owned and operated Elk Creek Dragway. He also established Jackson Racing Engines, transforming a personal hobby into a 43-year business and a family enterprise.
Faith, Family, and Community Leadership in Pulaski
Beyond his mechanical and construction ventures, Jackson dedicated significant time to his faith and community. He founded and served as president of the Christian Men’s Fellowship at First Christian Church (DOC) in Pulaski. His church service included roles as board co-chair, cabinet chair, and choir member. His professional and personal life intersected across diverse trades, spanning mechanics, farming, welding, cable television installation, and race car driving.
Above all his titles, his favorite was “Pop Pop.” He is survived by Janet G. Jackson, his wife of 58 1/2 years. Additional survivors include his children, Missie (Greg) Nash, and Rusty (Melissa) Jackson, all of Pulaski; grandchildren Ashlin Jackson, Jordan (Adam) Boadwine, Ericka (Sarah) Nash, Bailey Nash, and Drew Jackson; and one great-grandson, Jackson Ryan Boadwine. He is also survived by his brother-in-law John (Beth) Gregory, nieces, nephews, friends, and his racing family. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Phyllis A. Holliman and Wanda J. Fisher, brother Robley A. Jackson, and sister-in-law Joan G. Knode.
