Denver Broncos overcome 11-point deficit to defeat Chiefs 28-24

The Denver Broncos secured a 28-24 comeback victory against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, overcoming an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit to claim sole possession of first place in the AFC West. The win, finalized by a critical goal-line stand against Patrick Mahomes, moved the Broncos to a 6-2 record and the No. 1 seed in the AFC. The victory also served to compensate for the team’s 31-10 loss in the season opener at Arrowhead.

Entering the final period, the outlook for Denver appeared bleak. A loss would have left the team at 5-3, trailing the Chiefs by a game and a half in the division and handing Kansas City a sweep of the season series. However, the Broncos responded with 15 unanswered points, fueled by a performance from quarterback Nix, who completed 20 of 32 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns. Jonah Coleman contributed to the effort with 104 total yards and a score.

A Decisive Defensive Finish

The game concluded with a defensive sequence that analysts described as one of the all-timers. Discussing the game on 104.3 The Fan’s Stokley and Evans, with Mark Schlereth, Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt reflected on his emotional investment in the outcome. When host Mike Evans asked him about his reaction to the finish, Klatt noted that he felt the game was truly special. Maybe this is recency bias, but that was one of the all-timers, Klatt said. He noted that the situation felt hopeless for a time because of the general expectation that Mahomes would inevitably succeed in a late-game drive. With 15 seconds remaining and Kansas City at the one-yard line, the Broncos defense prevented a touchdown. Outside linebacker Que Robinson forced an incomplete throw on a designed pass play, and the unit ultimately held firm following a false start and a game-winning sack.

The defensive success was attributed to the team’s ability to pressure the quarterback, a hallmark of their season. Analysts noted that the Broncos successfully contained Mahomes on broken plays, a scenario where he had historically found success against Denver’s defense in previous years. Before the game, Cecil Lammey had summarized the necessary defensive approach in three words: Go get Mahomes. The team’s pass rush, led by Nik Bonitto and Zach Allen with Robinson emerging as a significant threat on the edge, executed that strategy when it mattered most.

Shifting Momentum in the Division

For Nix, who faced public debate regarding his position just weeks ago, the victory is considered the most significant regular-season win of his tenure.
