New research indicates that people with depression may face a greater risk of developing diabetes, and researchers in the research conducted by Diabetes UK discovered that people with a history of depression are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes.
Previous research indicated that People with diabetes Type 2 people are twice as likely to suffer from depression than those who do not suffer from this condition.
The researchers in this study conducted a comprehensive examination and used a randomized statistical method to determine whether type 2 diabetes and depression were related. For the first time, the study revealed that depression directly causes an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
The results published by FoxNews also revealed that high body weight partly explains the effect of depression on type 2 diabetes.
In addition, research has identified seven genetic variants that contribute to both conditions, affecting insulin production and levels of inflammation in the brain, pancreas, or adipose tissue.
This finding “highlights depression as a contributing cause of type 2 diabetes and may help improve prevention efforts,” the study’s lead author wrote in a statement.
She added: “The results are important for both individuals living with these conditions, as the treating physician should consider performing additional tests to help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes in people who suffer from depression.”
Despite these findings, researchers found no evidence that type 2 diabetes leads to the development of depression, even though both conditions share common risk factors such as obesity.
