The project that sought to declare feral dogs as an invasive exotic species and provide for their control by the health authority, suffered a resounding rejection in the Chamber of Deputies.

The regulation, which reached only 19 votes in favor, received 99 votes against and 21 abstentions, which resulted in its archiving and the impossibility of presenting a similar proposal until after a year.

According to what was published on the website of the Chamber of Deputies, the regulations defined a feral dog as one that was born or has returned to its wild state, living without supervision or direct control of human beings. Their aggressive behavior in the presence of people stood out, even attacking domestic animals and wildlife throughout the country.

The project proposed the control of these dogs through Law 19,473 on hunting, allowing their capture by anyone outside urban areas and urban areas, more than 200 meters from any town or rural home. The captured dogs would be placed at the disposal of the municipality or corresponding authority, with the aim of protecting people and livestock.

However, the proposal encountered strong opposition in the legislative body, evidenced by the overwhelming majority of votes against it. This result marks a clear rejection of the idea of considering feral dogs as an invasive exotic species and establishing measures for their control.
