It’s a verdict that will have much to talk about. Quarterback Deshaun Watson was handed a six-game ban on Monday after a total of 25 sexual harassment claims were pending against the 26-year-old at one point. The decision was made by an expert appointed by the NFL league and the NFLPA players’ union after a three-day hearing.
Watson only switched from the Houston Texans to the Cleveland Browns in March, where he signed a five-year contract with a guaranteed annual salary of 44 million francs (220 million in total). The NFL star did not play a single game for his old team last season after accusations against him mounted.
23 out-of-court settlements
A total of 25 civil lawsuits by massage therapists were pending. Watson is said to have become sexually assaulted in various ways during treatment. However, twice after hearings, a grand jury dropped the charges. The quarterback himself always denied the allegations. Watson was able to reach an out-of-court settlement with 23 of the 25 women by Sunday. Another had long since withdrawn its lawsuit.
While the NFLPA has urged the league to accept the ruling, the NFL may want a harsher sentence and may still appeal. Either way, Watson will get away with a relatively light sentence. “Other cases of non-violent sex offenses have been punished far less severely than what the NFL called for in this case,” the verdict said.
17 game suspensions because of a bet

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, for example, will miss the first eight games of the season after allegedly taking performance-enhancing drugs. Position-mate Calvin Ridley missed the Atlanta Falcons all of last season with a 17-game suspension after illegally betting on his own team to win.
