Design Round-up: 20 Years of Qashqai, Audi’s Shanghai Hub, Kia’s Clay Tribute

Nissan marks two decades of the Qashqai, a crossover that carved a new niche; Audi launches a Shanghai tech hub for China-specific models; and Kia crafts a clay tribute to tennis star Rafael Nadal. The design news from Cardesign News reported on these developments, highlighting the evolving strategies of global automakers in product design and market localization.

The Qashqai’s 20-Year Legacy: Redefining the Family Car

The automotive world looked back on the 20-year journey of the Nissan Qashqai, a vehicle that, according to Nissan’s design director Matthew Weaver, was positioned between a traditional SUV and a hatchback. Weaver recalled an important moment from the project's early days: "My manager at the time said to me: 'This is not SUV down, this is car up'." For me, that really sort of summed it up.” This philosophy resulted in a car that was user-friendly and functional, crafted to suit city life and to stand apart from the dominating SUVs popular at that time. In celebration of the anniversary, a wide range of original photos detailing the Qashqai’s design process has been released, including an image of the 2004 Qashqai concept.

Audi’s Shanghai Hub: A Strategic Bet on China’s Market

Audi has officially opened its AUDI Innovation & Technology Centre (AITC) in Shanghai, a move that shows the importance of the Chinese market. This new facility, opened together with SAIC, will serve as the central development hub for the AUDI brand, with a specific mandate to lead the development of China-specific models. The opening of the AITC was attributed to two key factors: local development and the ability to make swift decisions.

Kia’s Clay Court: A Nod to Tennis and Material Innovation

Shifting from global strategy to artistic expression, Kia has unveiled a unique full-scale clay model of its EV4 GT. The catch? The clay is a literal mixture of automotive clay and the clay from the iconic Roland-Garros tennis courts in Paris. This creative tribute is in honor of Rafael Nadal’s 63 singles titles won at Roland-Garros. The clay model features white automotive tape to mimic a tennis court’s lines and small lettering on the front and rear to signify his titles.

New Leadership in Automotive Design

The global design scene is also seeing a shuffle in leadership. Avinash Kumar has joined Czinger Vehicles as an automotive visualization designer. Sean Sung-Huem Paick has been appointed senior lead designer at General Motors. In a significant move, Pierre Leclercq has been named head of design for Opel-Vauxhall, while Sandeep Bhambra joins Citroen and DS as head of design.
