Designer’s Double Deck Airline Seat Innovation Sparks Farting Debate

A young designer claims to have found the key to one of the many airline dilemmas: the lack of space on planes, which prevents them from agglomerating more passengers per flight. His solution, which he envisions as the future of cheap flights, is the incorporation of “double deck” seats.

The problem? Well, social media users were quick to see that the proposal would leave people sitting in the bottom row with the butts of their peers in the top row right in their faces. That is, exposed to flatulence.

In Redditthe users were worn out in jokes and the Business Insider He even headlined that “A viral photo of an airplane seat design sparked a fierce debate about farting.”

“Funny for the one who farts, not much for the one who receives it,” one user commented. “I would use it. That extra legroom looks amazing. I knew I’d see a lot of comments about farts, but honestly, a fart would hit you anyway.” qualified another.

One more commented that “You may have more legroom, or you may not get farted. Which do you choose?”

The designer defends himself

The innovation called “Chaise Lounge Economy Seat” was devised by Alejandro Nunez Vicente, 23 years old, being nominated in 2021 for the “Crystal Cabin” awards for aviation. Due to this sudden exposure, the young man even took a break from his Master’s studies to dedicate all his resources and time to this project.

Currently, he assures from the Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX) in Germany, where he presents his product, he is in talks with “the biggest players in the industry” of air.

And yes, he’s already aware of the jokes, and he touched on it. In an interview with USA Todayexplained that “the idea is that there is some kind of limitation there (in the partition between the upper and lower seats)”.

If a passenger released a gas, he assured, “it would not pass directly”, unless – according to the newspaper that quoted him – it was especially strong.

“People can talk, they always hate innovation in some way,” he added before CNN. “Most of the time, when you show something new, everyone hates it at first, they are afraid of change. But the more you show it, and the more you develop it, and the more they see it, the more they get used to it.”

As contemplated, the double seat would allow passengers in the bottom row to extend their legs freely, while those above can recline the seat. One thing for another.

In addition, he plans that the ‘set’ of double seats – which will be tested at the Aircraft Interiors Expo and is already available in the Metaverse – go in the center of wide planes, flanked on both sides by rows single-deck currents, to maintain the balance of the aircraft.

However, given its distribution, other problems arise. For example, there would no longer be compartments in the roof to store luggage, and those who go in the upper rows would have more access problems -or evacuation in cases of emergency- than those in the lower rows.

Ars Technica He even doubts that it can pass the security parameters contemplated by US legislation, since it could cause accidents between passengers of the upper and lower lines, without also considering that many of the most used aircraft models would have weight problems if they were to be used. Double the number of people inside.
