Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer, but when dermatologists are scarce in Quebec, how can you detect the symptoms as early as possible?

It is to this question that the dermatologist Joseph Doumit came to answer Thursday, in an interview with TVA Nouvelles.

The specialist identified melanoma and carcinoma as the two pimples most likely to be harbingers of cancer.

“There are two types of pimples that you normally see that are very suspicious: those that look like moles […] and those that look like a red pimple that just won’t heal,” says Dr. Doumit.

The latter adds that of the two pimples, melanoma is the one that should be taken more seriously.

This takes the form of an asymmetrical mole, which often changes color several times. It grows rapidly and can sometimes bleed.

“Melanoma accounts for about 80% of skin cancer mortality cases,” says the dermatologist.

Dr. Joseph Doumit reminds us of the importance of not neglecting to examine your skin regularly, because a skin cancer discovered late in life can result in the loss of an eye or a disfigured face.

“People show up with a little pimple that’s huge. Sometimes they think it’s a small cyst or […] they link it to an injury, but ultimately it’s a small skin cancer,” he says.

The dermatologist explains that cancer often develops through its roots.

“What you see on the skin is not really what represents what is underneath the skin and the severity of this cancer,” says Dr. Doumit.

He reiterates the importance of wearing glasses offering protection against the sun’s rays, sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and not neglecting to apply it to the eyelids and ears.

“We can’t stop our lives. You still have to go outside and enjoy the good weather, but you have to protect yourself, ”says Joseph Doumit.

However, he recommends avoiding exposure to the sun as much as possible when the UV index is particularly high, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
