Microsoft Dev Box is a new cloud service that the Redmond company presented at its Build 2022 conference. Microsoft believes that as developers we need flexibility to configure and maintain our workstation. But even “small changes” can unexpectedly poison our development environments, interrupting our flow and costing hours to undo.
At the same time, many IT organizations struggle to provide development teams with the flexibility they need to stay productive. Hardware requirements for developer workstations can change quickly as projects evolve, and an increase in hybrid development teams means it’s harder than ever to get developers the resources they need.
It is to iron out these difficulties that the Microsoft Dev Box service was created.
The service provides developers with secure, code-ready workstations for hybrid teams of all sizes. Development teams create and manage Dev Box images with all the tools and dependencies their developers need to build and run their apps. Teams can include their app’s source code and binaries built overnight, allowing developers to immediately start running and understanding the code without having to wait for lengthy rebuilds.
Microsoft has just announced the general availability of Dev Box.
Since its first presentation, Dev Box has evolved a lot. Recently, Microsoft worked closely with the Visual Studio team to add built-in integrations that optimize the Visual Studio experience on Dev Box. Microsoft has also introduced customizing config as code in Dev Boxwhich will provide dev leads with even finer control to configure dev boxes around specific tasks and allow them to connect Dev Box provisioning to their existing Git flow.
To use Microsoft Dev Box, each user must have a license for Windows 11 Enterprise or Windows 10 Enterprise, Microsoft Endpoint Manager, and Azure Active Directory P1.
Microsoft Dev Box pricing offers monthly and hourly pricing options per Dev Box instance and includes everything you need to deliver development desktops in the cloud.
