The number of fatalities caused by the extratropical cyclone that hit southern Brazil last weekend may be much higher than the 42 already confirmed because the record of people declared missing rose from 25 on Thursday to 46 this Friday .

The significant increase in the missing is reflected in the latest official bulletin, released this Friday by the Civil Defense, and which mainly updates the situation in Muçum, the city most affected by the environmental tragedy and where firefighters are searching for 30 people.

Another eight missing people are wanted in the city of Lajeado and another eight in Arroio do Meio. All three were affected by the rise of the Taquari River.

The most affected region is Río Grande do Sul, the southernmost state of Brazil and bordering Argentina and Uruguay, in which 41 deaths have been confirmed so far, the vast majority in the cities of Muçum (15) and Roca Sales (10). ), and the other fatality was registered in the neighboring state of Santa Catarina.

According to the latest Civil Defense bulletin, firefighters have so far managed to rescue 3,130 people who had been isolated by the floods, several of whom had to wait for help on the roofs of their homes.

The cyclone affected 135,088 people in 85 municipalities, of which 10,927 had to temporarily or permanently leave their homes due to the floods that left some cities under water and destroyed bridges, roads and other infrastructure, as well as extensive crops.

According to the Ministry of Integration and Regional Development, the Brazilian Government has so far recognized the state of public calamity declared by 79 cities in Rio Grande do Sul, which will have priority in sending aid.
