The human toll of the terrible fire that almost razed a town on the island of Maui now exceeds 100 dead, announced Tuesday the governor of the American archipelago of Hawaii, Josh Green.

“101 lives have now been lost,” he said in a televised address, adding that rescuers had now searched just over a quarter of the search area they had to cover.

This fire is the deadliest in more than a century in the United States.

The town of Lahaina, on the west coast of Maui, was almost entirely engulfed in flames. On the spot, thousands of buildings are destroyed and many have been reduced to a simple pile of greyish ashes.

The former capital of the kingdom of Hawaii, which had 12,000 inhabitants, now has its dead and the authorities have already warned that the human toll could still increase considerably over the next few days.

Relatives of missing persons are encouraged to take a DNA test to help identify the corpses, which are often unrecognizable.
