Devastating Flooding in New York State: Emergency Declaration as Roads Turn to Waterways

Heavy rain fell on Sunday in New York state, causing “life-threatening” floods that turned roads into waterways that swept away bridges, prompting authorities to declare a state of emergency.

A woman was killed while trying to leave her home with her dog in the Hudson Valley when it was swept away, according to media reports.

State Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency in Orange County, northwest of New York City, and in central Ontario, noting that up to 200 millimeters of rain created “life-threatening flooding” conditions.

“We are approaching a dangerous stage in these weather conditions,” she said.

By Sunday evening, more than 12,000 customers had lost power, her office said.

Heavy rain flooded roads and trapped citizens in their cars and homes.

The National Weather Service said it was receiving multiple reports of severe flooding and people stranded in vehicles in eastern Orange County.

It warned drivers to be careful.

The governor’s office said the state should prepare for more storms Monday.

“Heavy rains caused by slow thunderstorms are expected to continue to cause flash floods and moderate to isolated flooding of rivers tonight until Monday,” he added.
