The Devils and their Swiss colony will challenge the Hurricanes in the semifinals of the NHL Eastern Conference. Captain Nico Hischier and his teammates won 4-0 in Newark in Act VII of the first round which opposed them to the New York Rangers, thanks to a new shutout from Akira Schmid.

No. 3 in the hierarchy of goalkeepers at the start of the season, Schmid made 31 saves to become the 10th “rookie” in history to sign at least 2 shutouts in a series. The 22-year-old Bernese goalkeeper was named first star, as in Act V already won 4-0 in Newark.

Nico Hischier was credited with an assist – his 5th in the series – on the 2-0 scored by Tomas Tatar in the 36th minute. Jonas Siegenthaler was the most used player in the Devils’ camp with 23’07” on the ice, while Timo Meier proved to be very valuable by carrying out no less than 6 charges before having to leave the ice following to a charge from Rangers captain Jacob Trouba. He did not return to the game, but he was present on the ice when greeting the defeated.

The Devils hadn’t won a series since the 2012 Eastern Conference final won once morest the Rangers. They had since only participated in the playoffs once, in 2018, losing to Tampa Bay.
