The DFB is parting ways with Hansi Flick after the embarrassment against Japan. The successor as national coach should also be an ex-FC Bayern coach.

Wolfsburg – The decision has been made: The German Football Association (DFB) will release Hansi Flick from the job of national coach this Sunday (September 10th) after Germany’s 4-1 debacle against Japan.

DFB is parting ways with national coach Hansi Flick – Nagelsmann is being discussed as a successor

On Tuesday, DFB sports director Rudi Völler will be in the coaching bench in Dortmund for the international match against France (9 p.m., here in the live ticker). According to the Bild Flick’s possible successor has apparently also been determined. Accordingly, the DFB would like to negotiate with Julian Nagelsmann with a view to the home European Championship in 2024.

The former coach of FC Bayern is still under contract with the Munich team, Nagelsmann and the German record champions would have to agree to terminate the contract. Or the DFB could even transfer a transfer fee to Säbener Straße. It is expected, however, that Bayern would let Nagelsmann, who has been receiving a salary for months without having to work, go.

DFB dismisses national coach Flick: negative trend since 2022 is the deciding factor

The DFB team had been in a worrying negative trend since the beginning of 2022. Of the last 17 international matches under Flick, the German national team was only able to win four. However, they lost six times, most recently three times in a row – 0:1 against Poland, 0:2 against Colombia and now 1:4 against Japan.

The last time Germany suffered three defeats in a row was 38 years ago under Franz Beckenbauer. In addition, for the first time in 59 years, the DFB selection remained without a win in four home games in a row. And that just nine months before the 2024 European Championship with games between Hamburg, Dortmund, Munich and Berlin.

Sporting success is the top priority for the DFB. Therefore the decision was inevitable.

National coach Hansi Flick dismissed: DFB says decision is “inevitable”

“The committees agreed that the senior men’s national team needs new impetus after the recent disappointing results,” DFB President Bernd Neuendorf was quoted as saying in a public statement: “We need a spirit of optimism in our own country with a view to the European Championships and confidence. For me personally, it is one of the most difficult decisions of my time in office so far. Because I appreciate Hansi Flick and his assistant coaches as football experts and people. But sporting success is the top priority for the DFB. Therefore the decision was inevitable.”

In addition to Flick, the two assistant coaches Marcus Sorg and Danny Röhl will also be relieved of their duties with immediate effect. The 58-year-old Flick from Baden took over the position of national coach from world champion coach Joachim Löw on August 1, 2021. Is Nagelsmann following now? (pm)
